Language and Law

Written on September 9, 2024

Recently, I have been researching the topic of immigration law through my ISM class. I was able to learn that Immigration attorneys defend their clients in court settings, which is exciting to me because I love public speaking. With my background in speech and debate, knowing that one day I will use the skills I learned through debate brings me joy. What really interested me was that I realized I would be able to use my Spanish speaking skills when I pursue immigration law. Considering that the United States receives a lot of Latin American migrants, it is safe to assume that a lot of Spanish speaking immigration lawyers speak Spanish when working with their clients. While I am proficient in Spanish, I could work on speaking the language in a more professional manner. Speech is a significant factor in making good impressions on people, so I want to make sure I speak professionally.

With the new information I learned, I can use it to drive my interest further. I can go to the law meetups provided by the ISM program to communicate with professionals in law and communicate with other ISM students interested in law as well. After going to the meetups, I can use the information I learned to create more questions I have towards my topic to further my curiosity.
